Overview
The Division of Vascular Surgery has a rich tradition as the leading vascular center in New Jersey. Originally, the division was led by Norman Rosenberg, MD, a key figure in the development of the field of vascular surgery. Under Alan M. Graham, MD, the division grew to become a local and national leader in the treatment of patients with complex vascular pathology. Now, under the directorship of Saum Rahimi, MD, the center is looking to expand its services even further, by recruiting additional faculty, creating a new environment that encourages research, and providing community outreach programs.
The Division of Vascular Surgery shares the mission of the newly created Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences.
Our Vascular Center of Excellence offers both endovascular (minimally invasive) and traditional operative surgical treatment, with advanced state-of-the-art equipment and devices for all vascular diseases, including:

Vascular Lab
The Vascular Laboratory at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is one of the premier noninvasive vascular diagnostic testing facilities in New Jersey. Accredited by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC), formerly called ICAVL, the center performs more than 10,000 noninvasive vascular laboratory studies each year. Certified technologists employing state-of-the-art technology perform a broad array of studies under the supervision of the faculty of the division of vascular surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
These noninvasive studies include evaluation of the arterial system of the lower and upper extremities by Duplex Ultrasound, Doppler and pulse volume recording analysis to identify disease. These noninvasive studies of the lower extremities may be helpful in the identification and management of patients with claudication, rest pain or non-healing wounds. Upper extremity evaluations are useful in the diagnosis of patients with thoracic outlet syndrome and Raynaud’s disease. Testing of the venous system is possible to identify disorders of the superficial, perforator and deep venous systems. Screening Duplex Ultrasound examinations for carotid artery narrowing are performed to identify patients at increased risk for stroke. In conjunction with transcranial Duplex, the arterial supply to the brain may be imaged. By noninvasive evaluation, vasculogenic impotence or erectile dysfunction may be identified, allowing treatment.
The laboratory is open seven days a week for outpatient and inpatient studies. Emergency studies may be performed at the bedside of critically ill patients or those who cannot travel to the laboratory.
Vascular Lab services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital’s Somerset location are also under the direction of the Vascular Center of New Jersey.
