The Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology focuses on the effects of development, environment, genes and epigenetics on normal development and human disease states. The division is the home of the USEPA Center for Neurotoxicology and Exposure Assessment and The Translational Working Group on oxidatve stress. The members of the center and working group consist of more than 10 faculty members from the medical schools and the School of Public Health of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Members also include faculty from several other universities in the United States, Taiwan, Japan and China. The center has been involved in research in 10 countries.
Areas of interest include PCBs, dioxins, heavy metals, phthalates and endocrine disruptors in general. The disease states studied are autism, asthma, delay in neurodevelopment, reproductive toxicology, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, hepatic dysfunction and ROP.
Members are on many editorial boards of medical journals and national advisory boards of the U.S. government, including the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The division also has expertise in protocol design for pharmacology studies of new drugs in children and working on the development of new chemical entities for the amelioration and possibly prevention of chronic inflammatory diseases and oxidative stress in humans of all ages. Members are internationally recognized experts in many areas and are consultants to several governments, primarily in Asia. The division was instrumental in the development of the Children's Environmental Health Caucus in the U.S. Congress and is still active with the caucus.
