Department of Medicine
Division of Hematology
The Division of Hematology provides specialized care for patients with complex hematologic conditions--i.e., conditions that primarily affect the blood. Physicians from this division evaluate and manage patients through several specialized and statewide referral centers and programs. Hematologists with significant expertise in various blood disorders participate in providing innovative comprehensive diagnosis and treatment.

The Transfusion Medicine Program of the Department of Pathology directs the state-of-the-art services of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital consisting of the Transfusion Service, a Stem Cell Laboratory and an in-house blood center (RWJ Blood Services).
We annually transfuse approximately 32,000 blood products at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at RWJUH and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Surgical and trauma patients, premature infants, pediatric patients and recipients of stem cell, marrow or organ transplants, as well as patients with hematologic diseases such as sickle cell anemia and hemophilia, all depend on donated blood as part of their care. Our blood drives foster good will among patients, families, physicians and the community.
We support the stem cell transplant program by collecting autologous and donor peripheral stem cells for our patients. As a National Marrow Donor Program collection site for the state, we are part of the largest and most diverse marrow program that works to save lives through transplants. We modify blood and platelets to meet our patient needs and extend these services to nearby hospitals. The program has considerable therapeutic apheresis experience, especially for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, sickle cell anemia, Guillain-Barre, graft versus host disease, renal and cardiac allograft rejection. Apheresis is available for our patients and those at RWJUH in Somerset.
