The Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) is just beginning to participate in HIEs, but this participation is expanding. Authorized healthcare providers are being added regularly to HIEs in which RWJMS participates to better serve our patients.

Today RWJMS participates in the following Health Information Exchanges:

Jersey Health Connect:- Jersey Health Connect is established to help patients and their authorized health care providers, treating the same patient, share or exchange relevant health care information. Only patients and caregivers who are authorized including physicians, hospitals, labs, etc., have secure, immediate, electronic access to your vital medical information. This helps your caregiver have access to needed medical information to provide you with the best care possible.

Rutgers Health staff are unable to perform the opt out process for you.

Carequality Network: The Carequality network was developed through the Sequoia Project to provide a national-level, system to enable exchange between and among health data sharing networks. Carequality will allow our providers who use the GE Centricity EMR to send and receive medical records to and from EPIC, Cerner, and other EMR vendors that participate in Carequality even if they are not in our local geographic area.

You may find additional information about Carequality at www.carequality.org. You may opt out of the Carequality network by calling 844-220-5417 or by notifying us when you register as a patient.

As our participation in other exchanges expands, we’ll update this information. Check back for updates.

Care summary documents are available to authorized healthcare providers (and their staff) who certify to RWJMS that they are involved in that patient’s care. These documents include basic information such as the patient’s diagnoses, medications, allergies, lab test results, names of providers and visit summaries.

Selected documents from medical records are also available.

You will be enrolled automatically in each of the health information exchanges listed above when you register as a patient. If you do not wish to be enrolled, you have the right to opt out of enrollment. You may opt out by notifying our registration or reception staff at the time of registration or by calling 844-220-5417.

If you are enrolled, you may revoke your enrollment at any time by notifying registration staff or calling 844-220-5417.

Opting out of the health information exchanges will not affect your ability to receive treatment from us. However, it will prevent your providers here from getting information from your other providers and your other providers from getting information from us electronically so it may make it more difficulty to coordinate care.

Certain information is designated as "sensitive" information including information about mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, HIV/AIDS and genetic information. This "sensitive" information is given special additional protection under law. Diagnoses and laboratory tests related to these diagnoses are excluded from the information we send to the health information exchanges. However, complete medication information is sent to the exchanges because knowledge of medication use is important to providing safe medical care.
