Division of Pediatric Critical Care

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The PICU at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (BMSCH) is a 20-bed, state-of-the-art multidisciplinary inpatient service that provides a full range of services to critically ill and injured children from birth to the age of 21 in a patient and family-centered environment. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by highly trained intensive care physicians, nurses, and respiratory therapists. It is the only regional PICU with board-certified pediatric intensivists physically on site 24 hours a day to provide immediate care to children with life-threatening, complex medical problems, where every second counts. As the first and only certified pediatric trauma center in New Jersey, the PICU at BMSCH is uniquely equipped to handle all aspects of pediatric traumatic injury, including physical, psychological and emotional issues. Pediatric critical care physicians also serve as medical control for an active Pediatric Transport service, which provides advice and safe transfer via a specialized mobile ICU for children in the tri-state area.

The PICU is equipped to care for a full spectrum of illnesses and injury, including diseases of the lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, heart and brain. Severe, life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, heart and lung disease, metabolic disorders, epilepsy, renal failure, and severe traumatic injury are managed by pediatric intensivists in conjunction with pediatric and surgical subspecialists. Children are often cared for in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit after traumatic injuries or following such surgical procedures as kidney transplant, brain tumor removal and major orthopedic surgery. Technologically advanced medical interventions such as high-frequency oscillatory mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy and plasmapheresis are routinely performed.

Pediatric Intensive Care faculty members also run a busy Pediatric Moderate Sedation service, which provides sedation and analgesia for children undergoing procedures.
