The division has established a division of Emergency Medical Services. The section is involved in the establishment and oversight of pre-hospital care of children seen in Central Jersey. Ernest Leva, MD, has been the Chair of the Emergency Medical Services for Children's Committee of the State of New Jersey for the past 6 years. Currently Dr. Ernest Leva and Dr. Vasudha Chundru act as members of the Emergency Medical Services for Children's Committee.

The division also affords to pediatricians in Central Jersey an Office Preparedness Course. This is a course in which mock code scenarios are performed in physician's offices to access and help in the preparation of significant problems that could take place in an office setting. After the course, there is a feedback session in which equipment and physician knowledge is updated and referred to the practice.

The division has established a section in Express Care Medicine in which board certified general pediatricians are available during the busiest time to treat patients with a wide range of minor problems, expediting their care, and significantly decreasing their time spent in the emergency department.

The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine is comprised of specialty trained pediatric physicians with expertise in pediatric emergency medicine. These specialists staff the emergency department at the Bristol Myers Squibb Children's Hospital, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The division is charged with caring for the most severely injured and sick children as well as those with the most minor problems. The department orchestrates the teaching program for the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Department of Pediatrics. First, second, and third year pediatric residents rotate through the emergency department, as well as medical students from RWJMS. Educational opportunities are also afforded to family practice residents from both the Somerset Hospital Teaching Program and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Family Practice Program.

Physician Assistant students and nursing students are also educated in the Pediatric Emergency Department. The division is intimately involved in research and academic pursuits pertaining to pediatric emergency medicine.

The division is unique for the fact that it has the only pediatric toxicologist in the state. The new Section of Toxicology presently consists of two toxicologists who are available to treat and consult on a wide range of toxicological issues in the pediatric emergency department, the general emergency department, and in both the children's hospital and the general hospital.
